AGV Tourmodular Helmet Safety Recall

On February 13, 2024, Dainese S.p.A., the parent company of helmet maker AGV, issued a safety recall for certain AGV Tourmodular full-face motorcycle helmets. The Tourmodular is a full-face helmet with a chin bar that flips up, making it a modular helmet.

According to Dainese, the micrometric buckle on affected helmets may not engage automatically due to out-of-tolerance components. This could potentially increase the risk of injury or death if the helmet is not properly secured on the rider's head.

The affected helmets were produced between February 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, and come in various sizes, colors, and graphics. Approximately 2,142 helmets in the US may be affected, representing around three percent of the population.

Dainese advises riders to refer to the user safety manual for instructions on how to manually engage the ratchet mechanism to secure the chin strap. However, if the rider is unaware of the issue or does not know how to manually engage the buckle, it could pose a serious safety risk.

If the ratchet does not automatically engage, riders may notice the absence of the usual clicking sound when the buckle locks into place. The red engagement lever may also fail to close or lock properly, allowing it to move freely. The helmet may feel loose or move on the rider's head if the ratchet is not properly engaged.

Dainese plans to notify all known owners of affected helmets about the recall on April 12, 2024. The company will provide a remedy at no charge, which involves applying lubricant to the buckles of affected helmets. Quality assurance checks have been updated to include 100 percent of buckles on AGV Tourmodular units produced after July 2023.
